Weddings and dimes

Weddings are complicated. Not only for the bride and groom, who take their vows and promise to spend the rest of eternity together, but also for everyone else. Strange things happen during weddings. Some of consequence while others, not worth a dime.

I attended a wedding yesterday. A reception actually. It was alright. Usual stuff. You know whats the worst part about such weddings and receptions? That, by the time everything gets wrapped it, its way past midnight. And y’know whats the problem with that? Finding a god-damn parking when you get back home! I mean, what am I supposed to be do with my car at 1 am in the morning? Shove it up my…err back pocket or drive it right into the lobby of my building, or better yet, might as well just sleep in it!

Common sense prevailed and I chose the obvious. Park the car along with 3 other cars that are blocking a dozen other cars and leave my phone number on the dashboard. We do that quite often. Infact people leave their cell phone numbers on the dashboard all the time regardless of the parking space or time. Anyways, so at 1.30 am, I hit the sack wondering which kind soul will act as my alarm the following morning and hoping as hell no jerk decides to take his car out at any other ungodly hour. The alarm did ring and it sure was my cell phone. But the one I set. For 6.10 am. I woke up and wondered why hasn’t anyone called me yet. I ponder for a minute. Should I just go down, move the car, come back and then get ready for work? Or should I quickly take a shower, dress up and then go down, once and for all, and leave for work? The chose the second option. Option 1 was obsolete. If no cars have moved yet, then how is 6.15 am any different from 1.15 am? With enough calculations by the minute to even make Kip Thorne blush, I stepped into the shower.

But even Thorne cannot account for Murphy’s law. At exactly that precise moment when the shampoo and shower gel are doing what they do best, quite uncharacteristically, the cell phone rings.

Sometimes I wish I was sloshed at such times with not a care of the world. But then how drunk is drunk enough? As said by Matt Damon in The Legend of Bagger Vance, “You see every drink of liquor you take kills a thousand brain cells. Now that doesn’t much matter ‘cos we got billions more. And first the sadness cells die so you smile real big. And then the quiet cells go so you just say everything real loud for no reason at all. That’s ok, that’s ok because the stupid cells go next, so everything you say is real smart. And finally, come the memory cells. These are tough sons of bitches to kill.” Guess being a teetotaler has its advantages.

By the way, this one’s not worth a dime.

  1. I can totally understand…its utter frustation when u dont get parking space….
i wonder why did night guard doing at that time…he shd force ppl to follow parking rules…what if some emergency arises and ur car is strucked in this parking haywire…

In this regard those societies are better where u have fix parking space….nobody can park in ur space….even if ur guest are coming in u have to move ur car outside if u want ur guest to park in ur space…

    1. Yeah, the new buildings here now have underground parking with a space allotted to every flat. But the slightly older ones don’t have any options…

  2. Parking space ???? Thats the worst nightmare !!!!

My S refuses to come to certain parts of the city, for just one reason – no proper parking is available there.

And that too for men, who treat their car as their first wife, like my S, its just too much a big problem.

    1. Haha..my sentiments exactly. I’ve refused taking my wife to some places just because there won’t be any parking spaces at that time…or else I’ll have to spend sometimes upto an 45 min looking for a spot. And moreover, because we treat it like a first wife ;), we don’t wanna leave it lying around just anywhere. Only a proper safe spot would do.

  3. ha ha ha 🙂 good one!! the Matt Damon quote is soo apt!!! and you know the fun part comes while watching the drunks in action 🙂 [well..i know this wasnt the main focus..nevertheless :D]

    1. Yep, I saw it in a movie and it just got registered in my brain. No better way to describe drinking!!! 😀

LOL oh yes, I never drank but spent a lot of time in these so called ‘daaru party’ with a glass of coke and what fun to see people make such fools of themselves!!! 😀

  4. Masood, Just dropped in to say hello! 🙂

Not blog hopping, writing or reading anything. Just a little busy then a vacation then will be back.

How is Ibbu sweetu? Read that you are starting a food blog. Mwahahahaha.

  5. Sheesh!
Parking is always such a pain!
In our building, our parking space is being used by another tenant, which is ok since we don’t have avehicle yet… But, its tiring because when someone comes visiting, the parking space is needed and the fellow who has “borrowed” our space refuses to vacate it!!!
We had to get the message across to him quite strongly!!!!

  6. Parking is a perpetual problem in all the cities now.Number of cars is increasing without any planning on expansion of roads.
I can understand your condition when you were called while Shampoo all over.

  7. You’re in Abu Dhabi I guess innit? It is actually crazy over there.

And I really liked what Matt Damon Says – I completely agree 🙂 You cannot know this feeling unless you live it Masood 🙂

    1. Yep, Abu Dhabi man. And its totally crazy out there. Over and above, they’ve started paid parking there now. So all the more difficult to find parking at nights. I cannot even begin to tell how crazy frustrating it is every night.

Where do you stay in Dubai?

      1. Karama – Parking is a breeze THANKFULLY 🙂 Plus we have one in the basement as well. In Abu Dhabi it was a crazy idea to allow such tall buildings without underground parking.

        1. Karama – lucky dude…
I come to karama only if we wanna have chaats or good Indian food…and I have a friend who lives opp Bur Juman. Love that area…probably the only place in Dubai mainland that I like. Otherwise mostly stick to new Dubai.

  8. oh yes finding parking space is a perpetual pain for us too.It can be so irritating!

I agree with you. every buildings should have a parking space dedicated for the residents.

    1. Guess its the same in Doha as well.

You know, I visited Doha last year in Aug. My wife’s sister lives there. We might visit again…but not sure when 🙂

  9. *Masood’s blog is filled with white smoke and out of it steps a cute angel called Sakshi 😎 *

Came after reading your comment at Smiths  It was too irresistible you see, when you wrote “I’ve tried visiting your blog many times” …sobs. Am so grateful to you..have never heard anyone say that about my blog.

Oh la so you get the numbers of all the girls by just passing by their parked car  What is it called CAR DATING??

So what happened after the cell phone rang?

    1. LOL Angel with an angle?!

      Pleasure’s all mine, Sakshi.

Finally someone was smart enough to read between the lines! 😉

What do you think happened? 😀

  10. Btw now you can click this avtaar which will land you on my blog…the other one was my WP id which I am just fiddling with and forgot to log off before leaving traces everywhere I went 😳

    1. Right. It had happened before as well. And I kept thinking something wrong with my ID or my WP and all that jazz.

Anyways, rushing over to your blog right away… 🙂

  11. Parking problems are so funny, despite having a vehicle one ends up walking long distances! We even eat out and shop depending on the kind of parking available. It can be a pain. Good to see a post and a rant that made us smile 🙂

  12. yaaaaaar i dump the car many times becoz of that unnecessary stres….. 😦 but at times…we cant escape when it’s late night etc… Helll wid it..

  13. :))) haaaaaa:)) It happens to be all the time, sometimes it is the cell phone at others it is that door bell. I’m so happy now that my door bell isn’t working and my cell number is shared with just 4 living souls… peaceful

    Sprite please Masood!!

  14. Gosh! We do that during work! And once some 8-9 of us had to wait impatiently for over an hour while an unkind gentleman refused to come down and remove his car after work. He said he was in a meeting and switched off his phone. The 8-9 of us unanimously decided to take matters in our hands and deflate the tyres. Er…not the best example this !

    1. Haha…deflate the tyres?!! Didn’t that man figure out you guys did it?

I leave anonymous notes on cars if they are not parked properly. Sometimes when it is terribly parked, I flex a bit on expletives as well. Need to get the point across you see 😉

  15. I can understand ur plight,we had tough time in finding a parking space when we visited abudhabi last time.Parking problem in abudhabi is heights…

Sometimes we take bus instead of car to go to such places where is it difficult to get parking.

  16. Wow! Parking is so difficult there? Wow! Let me make you jealous – we have parking for 3 cars in our driveway + the garage 🙂 But when we were in London, we had this problem. Our apt did not have parking so we had to park far far away. It used to be a constant struggle to find a place where we could park without a permit. Apparently we could not even pay and get a permit because our apt was allowed on the condition that the tenants would not get council parking! We were so glad to move here and the biggest bonus was the parking 🙂

That Matt Damon quote was fantastic!

  17. sounds like our problem! We actually decide which invites to accept based on how it will affect our parking situation in the night!

Plus I realize that even if there is less space in the colony, it can be managed but one can’t do much about people who’re obnoxious and selfish and don’t have any compassion for fello citizens and neighbours, creating problems where a little thoughtfulness could save everyone the trouble!

  18. Lolz now thats quite a critical situation that you gt in.. And murphy has its own style of hitting at the weird time.. On serious note this prob can only be solved by collaborative efforts of everyone

    1. Collaborative efforts? Like those jokers who actually block two spots just because someone they know might be coming later?

      Sure 😉

Hehe…yes, it was a critical situation. And it took me a good 7-8 minutes by the time I could go down. The guy whose car I blocked was ready to swear. Guess he changed his mind when he saw me dripping wet…. :p
